The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Sports Handicapper Ron Raymond The Players Championship golf tournament is considered by many golfers as the 5th Major; as it provides the biggest golf purse of any other golf tournament and you normally get the top 50 golfers around the world to attend. Tiger Woods will no doubt be the favorite to win and look for the opening odds to put him at 3/1 to 4/1. Sergio Garcia was a 40/1 favorite to win in 2008, which means a $100 wager got you a $4000 profit.

The format of the 2009 The Players Championship tournament is stroke play and this year’s purse is listed at 9.5 million dollars. The Players Championship is after the Masters Tournament, and the Players Championship is normally in May and then you have the U.S. Open in June, the British Open in July, and the PGA Championship in August.

How to make money betting on golf? Let’s face it, if you’re a recreational bettor and want to have some interest right up until Sunday, then lay your money on Tiger Woods, because there’s more than an excellent chance he will hang around on Sunday and give more thrills to NBC should they carry the event. However, if your risk level is a bit higher than others, then look for value and find golfers who have a history at this course like a Phil Mickelson or put your money on the guy who just won the master and that would be Angel Cabrera.

Angel Cabrera was a 100/1 odds to win this tournament last year, so a $100 wager would have netted you a $10,000 profit. Not bad for 4 days work for just cheering on a guy right?

Ron Raymond's Golf Picks

As promised, here are my Top 3 golf picks for the 2009 Players Championship and keep in mind, this is from a betting perspective, where value is everything when you’re trying to win some money.

I’ve broken down my top 3 plays and will name them, Gold, Silver and Bronze picks.

Gold Pick: Tiger Woods +375.

Keys to selection: Tiger won this event in 2001 and getting him at +375 seems like a safe bet and maybe use this as a hedge for our other 2 wagers.

Silver Pick: Geoff Ogilvy +3300

Keys to selection: Ogilvy won the Accenture Match Play Championship this season and has made the top 10 list since 2003 at this tournament. Good value!

Bronze Pick: Chad Campbell +8000

Keys to selection: The last time this guy went to a Major (The Masters); he lost in a playoff with Angel Cabrera and Kenny Perry. Bit of a longshot, but worth some respect this weekend after his nice showing at Augusta.

In the meantime, bet on golf with Bookmaker.com

Golf General Betting Rules

Bet on all Major PGA Golfing Events Straight Up money line betting as well as matchups.

Bet right up until tee-off time.

In head-to-head matchups, both golfers must tee-off in order to have action. If 1 player misses the cut, his adversary is deemed the winner. If both players miss the cut the lower score wins. If both players have the same score, then all wagers are refunded.

Special Handicap Head to Heads If a player withdraws after tee off or misses the cut the player who plays the most holes wins.

Playoffs do not count for handicap bets.

To Win a Tournament All bets are treated as "All In". All players quoted have action regardless if a player withdraws before the tournament begins and are settled as a loss. In the event of a tie where 3 or more competitors are offered in one betting option, the payout will be divided by the number of players tied. For example 2 players tie for the Top USA player at the British Open will result in the normal payout given divided by 2.

If a tournament is shortened, after it has started, then all bets stand. Bets accepted after the end of a day's play are void unless there is further play, which counts towards the result of the tournament (other than a playoff). Or the betting is specifically stated to be on the outcome of a playoff.

If a tournament is officially abandoned, all bets on the tournament are void, except options that have already been decided.
