UFC 99 – The Comeback or the Way Down!
The one thing that drew me to the UFC was the “wow factor” of two guys going toe to toe and trying to knockout their opponents. To be honest, I’m not a “hardcore fight fan” that has all the Tapout gear or sits ring side with the Hollywood stars; I guess you would label me as an above average fan that follows boxing and looks at the UFC as a bit of a freak show, but in a good way! I don’t know all the MMA leagues that are out there, but I do know the big names from some of the other organization like Fedor, Brown and Faber.
From my point of view, Boxing lost its way in the late ‘90’s with their sleazy type promoters who made sure the meal tickets would get the win in a tough to call fight and Boxing lost it’s appeal since they lost Mike Tyson and a real Heavyweight Champion from North America. In order for Boxing to be back, it needs a real North American Heavyweight Champion, because they are the ones who will draw the networks and media action. It’s just as easy as that in this recession, as management in the big sports networks are desperately looking for that quick fix.
As for the UFC, I’m a bit disappointed in the last two Main Event Cards I’ve witnessed, as I’m not a big fan of the “ground and pound” type fighting. Don’t get me wrong, UFC 98’s main event (Evans and Machida) was a great fight and I was not disappointed in that fight, but the Matt Hughes and Matt Serra fight was not an entertaining fight in my view. When I first watched the UFC in the 90’s, when the Gracies and Shamrock were fighting, it was no holds barred and those guys were bringing it. Now, you have too much “wait and react” type fighters who circle the octagon for 4 minutes and fight for 1 minute.
If Dana White is reading this and wants to know what the average fans is looking for, maybe incorporate some rules that penalizes fighters who run away or avoid confrontation and when two fighters are on the ground and just sit on each other for more than 8 seconds, get the referee to make them get up. I understand the strategy of some fighters is to be patient and to exam their opponent and nobody wants a fighter to rush in and get KO’d, but maybe adjust the rules to avoid some boring fights.
As for UFC 99, should be an interesting fight between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva. Franklin heads into UCF 99 as the favorite at -140 and if you wagered $140 on Franklin and he won, you would win $100. If you wagered $100 on the underdog Silva and he wins the fight, he would payout $140.
UFC 99 doesn’t seem like a “marquee” card and since this fight is in Cologne, Germany, we might get to see this card on Spike or on the fight network later on that night. However, UFC 100 has all the making of a super fight, as George St. Pierre headlines the main event against Thiago Alves. Las Vegas Sportsbooks have made St. Pierre a -275 favorite, where you would need to lay $275 to win $100. On the under card, ex-WWE star and the UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar (-260) will take on Frank Mir (+210).
In conclusion, who would have thought a country like Brazil who’s known for their great soccer players, would be a fight factory for producing great champions in the MMA world.
