MLB Baseball New York Yankees (2-3) at Minnesota Twins (4-1) 7:05 pm Eastern ESPN SBG Global Opening Line: Yankees – 125, Total 10.5 -110
Opening day starter Carl Pavano goes back to the hill tonight for the Yankees as they begin a series in Minnesota. The Yankees have not had a quality start this season and are hoping Pavano can give them some innings tonight. New York’s best pitcher, Chien-Ming Wang is still on the disabled and the pitching staff has suffered. The staff had an ERA of almost 10 runs per game this past week and not one starter got past the fifth inning. Even with the pitching woes, early reports from SBG Global have the public all over the Yankees.
"We need the starters to give us six innings," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "We know we are a better team than we've shown." "We're obviously scuffling right now," said Andy Pettitte. Pavano allowed five runs - four earned - and six hits in 4 1-3 innings of a 9-5 win on opening day. "I'm pleased, to an extent," said Pavano, "You just want to get out there and compete."
New York is a -130 favorite with a total of 11 under – 125 at SBG Global.
Opposing Pavano will be Sidney Ponson who last pitched for the Yankees in August of last season. He went 0-1 with a 10.47 ERA with the Yankeees. Ponson is 6-12 with a 4.63 ERA lifetime against the Yankees.
The Yankees are not entirely healthy coming into this series. Hideki Matsui was placed on the disabled list Sunday due to a strained hamstring, and Johnny Damon may not start with a calf injury.
Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for Minnesota in its 3-1 win over the White Sox on Sunday.
