CFL Week 7 Previews
Calgary Stampeders (58.5) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (-1)
Where: Commonwealth Stadium
When: August 13th 2009
CFL Game Stats: www.atsdatabase.com
Where to bet: Bookmaker Sportsbook
Ron’s Preview: The Edmonton Eskimos had everything going for them in the first half vs. the Tiger Cats, and then the rain came and stole it all away! Well, maybe not literally, but it seem once the down pour started at Ivor Wynne last Saturday, the Eskimos couldn’t get any momentum going on offense. As for Calgary, the Stampeders bolted out quickly out of the gate vs. the Blue Bombers; they went up 23-3 at Halftime and barely hung on to win 31-23 at McMahon Stadium. Keep in mind, they only scored 8 points in the second half, which speaks volumes for the Bombers defense.
In hockey they would call this the Battle of Alberta, but it works for Football as well, as this is not only a division rivalry, but a provincial battle to boot! The Stampeders are 10-12-0 ATS and 8-14 SU vs. the Eskimos at Commonwealth since 1996 and the UNDER is 9-1-0 for the Stampeders when they are at home or on the road when the O/U is set at 54.5 or more in their last 10 games.
The way I see this game going on Thursday, the team who can keep their defense off the field the longest will win this game. In my view, there’s 3 elite QB’s in the CFL this season and two of them will be on the playing field this Thursday, with Calvillo being the third. Eskimos QB Ricky Ray seems to be back and when he’s throwing the deep ball, nobody is better or more accurate with that nice soft touch which he can drop in the basket from 50 yards away. In order for the Stampeders to win this game, they will need to run the ball 40% of the time and be successful at that, because they will not be able to afford too many two’s and outs! Tough game to predict, as 5 of the last 6 games Calgary has played in Edmonton, five of the six games were decided by 5 points or less.
*Note: These teams are going to hate each other in a month from now, as they are going to play each other 3 out of the next 4 games.

Ron’s Preview: Ever since the Winnipeg game, I’ve been saying to anybody who will listen, Argos Head Coach Bart Andrus should not be calling the offense for the Toronto Argonauts this year; he’s not CFL ready to call a game on offense. Granted, I love his disciplinary approach, but when it comes to calling 3 down football north of the Border, he’s putting his team in too many bad situations and everything is pointing to the wrong fall guys! It’s my belief, there is nothing wrong with the personnel on this football team, the receivers are fine, the running game is there, it’s the play calling. When was the last time you seen the Argos run a screen pass? In all the games I’ve watched them play this year, I can’t remember one screen pass. They don’t run enough draws; they don’t have a set of plays that set up other plays. For example, and I’m sorry if I lose the average reader here, but run a 34 trap, then follow it up with a Fake 34 trap, QB boot left and hit the back side slot back running a dig route to the QB side. Be innovative, run plays that will set up the next play, like a 36 counter followed by a 36 counter screen or 36 counter bootleg left. Stop hanging your players Bart Andrus and give up the offensive play calling to Steve Burratto who’s on your staff, he’s been there and then observe this season and then adjust next year.
As for this CFL football game, it seems the Lions have fixed their run defense situation and it’s nice to see linebacker JoJuan Armour back in a CFL uniform. The Lions can win this game by sticking to their game plan and find a way to stop Robertson, because the Argos don’t seem to have a game plan on offense and it will cost somebody their job eventually. The Lions are 7-7 ATS and SU at the Rogers Center and the UNDER is 10-4-0 in those games.

Montreal Alouettes (-8) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (48)
Where: Canad Inn STADIUM
When: August 15th 2009
CFL Game Stats: www.atsdatabase.com
Where to bet: Bookmaker Sportsbook
Ron’s Preview: CFL Teams are starting to figure out the Montreal Alouettes and the fact they were scoring 40 or more points a game in their first 3 games, shows you teams have adjusted to their offense. The Alouettes won 25-0 over an offensive inept Toronto Argonauts football team last week and this will be a great test for the Road Favorite Alouettes this Saturday at Canad Inn Stadium vs. Michael Bishop and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Bombers made some adjustments at halftime last week vs. the Calgary Stampeders, but it was a case of too little, too late! If you recall my preview last weekend, I stated if the Bombers can get Fred Reid more involved, they will have a shot. Granted, they didn’t win the football game, but he was chosen the CFL Player of the week.
The Bombers have a nice defense and the fact they went out and got Michael Bishop might help them save their season and they should be good enough to make the playoffs. Let’s face it, it’s only Week 7 and with a bit of luck and consistency, I can see this Bombers team giving the Alouettes a run for first place, but they will need to start off with a win this Saturday. As good as Montreal looked the first three weeks, they seem to pass a bit too much and if they can get Coburn involved a bit earlier, they will run away with the East. However, for some reason, they seem to ignore the running game at times and then when they do go to Coburn, he does nothing but grinds out yards.

Hamilton Tiger Cats (53.5) vs. Saskatchewan (-5)
Where: Mosaic STADIUM
When: August 16th 2009
CFL Game Stats: www.atsdatabase.com
Where to bet: Bookmaker Sportsbook
Ron’s Preview: The Tiger Cats are 4-2 SU on the season and have been a sports bettor’s best friend with their 5-1-0 ATS record. It seems when I watch a Tiger Cats game, they have the luck of the Irish always on their side and are getting the bounces. In my view, Hamilton capitalized on some good field positioning last week vs. Edmonton because of the rain. Nevertheless, they played well in the second half and were well coach by Bellefeuille.
However, they will be playing a Saskatchewan Roughriders team who will be playing their first home game in over 3 weeks and they will be playing this one under the Sunday Night lights on TSN. Saskatchewan will be in a nasty mood, as they lost 35-20 to the Lions last week and Durant threw two interceptions and will be looking to redeem himself.
The Tiger Cats are 4-9-0 ATS and 3-10 SU vs. the Roughriders at old Taylor Field and the OVER/UNDER in those games favored the OVER at 8-5-0. The Roughriders have won the last 8 meetings against the Tiger Cats at home and the last time the Tiger Cats won in Saskatchewan was on August 11th 2000 during Week 6 and won the game 29-23.
There are only two teams who give me ulcers when I watch them play; it’s the Roughriders and Lions, mainly because they give up the ball way too many times. If they can limit their turnovers this weekend, they should win the game.
