The $750,000 Santa Anita Derby is the last major California stakes for 3-year-olds heading to the Kentucky Derby. Hollywood Futurity and Sham S. runner-up Liquidity is the 5-2 favorite on the morning line.  The Santa Anita Derby will feature a field of 10 horses over 1 1/8 miles.

Liquidity is trained by Doug O'Neill and will look to bounce back from a poor Louisiana Derby where he finished sixth.  He will have his regular rider Corey Nakatani for the race. "He looks great and he's trained well, but until they show it in the afternoon, you never know," O'Neill said.

"We've definitely trained him a little bit harder. We've cranked on this guy a lot more than we did before the Louisiana Derby. We're expecting to see some improvement."

The next two horses on the morning line are both trained by Todd Pletcher.  King of the Roxy is 3-1 and Sam P. is 4-1. King of the Roxy is coming off a nice win in the Hutcheson at Gulfstream Park while Sam P. finished a good second to Great Hunter in the Robert B. Lewis.

Other horses that may have a shot are El Camino Real Derby winner Bwana Bull and San Felipe third place finisher Level Red.  A couple of possible long shot contenders are Tiago and Black Seventeen.

The post position and morning line odds for the Santa Anita Derby are as follows: Court the King is coming off a fourth in the El Camino Real Derby and is listed at 20-1 on the morning line with Jose Valdivia Jr. He is followed by followed by Sam P. with Ramon Dominguez at 4-1; Bwana Bull with Russell Baze at 8-1, Boutrous with Kent Desormeaux at 12-1, Liquidity with Corey Nakatani at 5-2; Black Seventeen with Clinton Potts at 15-1; Level Red with Aaron Gryder at 5-1, King of the Roxy with Richard Migliore at 3-1, Tiago with Mike Smith at 20-1 and Medici Code with Jorge Chavez at 30-1.
