NFL Betting Predictions and Super Bowl Odds
Ron Raymond is a Sports Handicapper and the founder of Phoenixsports.com.
Normally after the NFL draft, the hard core football bettors start scouring the internet for the NFL futures odds and the NFL Week 1 lines, so they can start breaking down every possible situation involving week 1 sides and totals.
For example, did you know the Super Bowl defending Champions Pittsburgh Steelers who are a -5.5 point home favorite in Week 1 vs. Tennessee, are 9-2 straight up, but only 5-6-0 against the spread during week 1 home games since 1983? Nice straight up record, but what’s even more impressive, the OVER is 10-1-0 for the Steelers in Week 1 at home and the O/U vs. the Titans for that game is 35.5. Something to consider when doing your NFL Picks and predictions when betting on the NFL games this season.
As a sports handicapper, I’m always looking for value in the first week or first game from any sports, as the bookmakers know the betting public loves to bet on the high profile teams or in this case, look for a lot of money to come flowing in on the Steelers because of their super bowl win over the Cardinals. The golden rule of sports betting goes something like this; “when everybody loves one side or a total, go the other way!”
There are some interesting lines and matchups for Week 1; the Miami Dolphins who went 11-5 SU in ‘08 are a +4.0 point road underdog vs. Matt Ryan and the Falcons, while the Baltimore Ravens who are 23-6 SU in September games as a home favorite, are a big -9.0 point chalk vs. newly acquired QB Matt Cassel and the Chiefs. The Carolina Panthers will be tested early, as the Eagles invade their stadium during week 1, while Ocho Cinco and the Bengals are a surprising -1.5 point home favorite vs. the Denver Broncos. Let’s face it, the Bengals are the Bengals and when they are a -3.5 point home favorite during Septembers games, they are 2-9 SU and 2-9-0 ATS since 1983. Here’s some trivia for you, the Denver Broncos have only been a road underdog during week 1 twice since 1983 and they covered both times. Once at Pittsburgh as a +7.0 point road dog in 1983 and then won 14-10 during the year 2000 as a +6.0 point away underdog vs. the St.Louis Rams, but lost that game 41-36 in a high scoring affair.

The Cleveland Browns are a +2.5 point home dog vs. the Vikings and the Houston Texans are a -4 point home favorite vs. the AFC East Jets. If you like division matchups the Jags and Colts hook up in Week 1 and the Jags are 1-4 SU in September Dome games. Let’s hope the Detroit Lions can at the very least, get one win this season, but they will have to do it on the road in week 1 vs. the Saints as a +11.5 point road underdog, but here’s a situation where you are getting some good value and the bookmakers know the public will not support the Lions because of their horrible season last year.
When making NFL predictions, keep in mind it’s very important to have the best sports handicapping tools at your disposal and the Database at ATSDatabase.com, is one of the best in the business for betting on NFL games.
The Cowboys are a -3 point road favorite vs. the Bucs in Week 1 and keep in mind this is a grass game for the Boys and they are an even 6-6 SU in this spot since ’83. The 49ers travel to Arizona to face the Cards and Arizona is a big -7 point home favorite in this spot. The Redskins are a +6.0 point road underdog vs. the Giants and the o/u is set at 40. Bad spot for the Skins, as they are 0-5 SU and ATS vs. Division opponents during Week 1 of the NFL season. What use to be the great show on Turf, the St.Louis Rams, will have to find a way to win as a +7.0 point dog vs. the Seahawks, while the GAME OF THE WEEK will be at Lambeau Field, as the Packers are a -3.0 point home favorite vs. their division rivals, the Chicago Bears! In fact, when the Packers are a home team during Week 1 of the NFL season and the over/under is set between 41.5 to 44.0, the Packers are 6-1 SU in this role. Plus, that Bears vs. Packers game will be the NBC Sunday Night Game of the Week, minus John Madden who retired this off season.
Finally, the Monday night double header will feature the New England Patriots as a -10 point home favorite vs. Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills; while the Raiders are a +7.0 point home underdog vs. the Chargers. The Raiders will have their work cut out for them, as they are 2-7-0 SU and ATS as a +7 or less Home Underdog during Week 1 to 4 since ’83.
